What is community technology?

- An application of technology to develop or empower a community. This can range from specific, non-geographic communities (a scientific community, groups with common interests, etc) to geographically organized communities (like a city neighborhood, or a rural township).
Community Technology is a field that has interested me greatly in recent years, and is quickly becoming a firm career choice in my mind. It covers everything from municipal wireless initiatives to open sourced technologies, and pretty much everything in between. Since I've been volunteering with a nonprofit as their technological consultant and web developer for several years, I was actually active in this field without ever being aware that there was a "field" with other professionals in similar positions, facing and developing solutions for similar challenges.
I'm developing this book as a space to aggregate discussions from the various communities that are involved with the community networking field. Ideally, I'd like to build a system that receives mailing list discussions and adds them directly to this section of the site as content, seperated into pages, to create an archive of discussions as a resource.
